Discussion on general flowbench design

flow bench, instead of a negative pressure flow bench?

I'd like to simulate flow on my intake manifold with pressure, rather then vacuum, as it will see lots of pressure under full throttle.

If possible, could I use a manometer? I'm not 100% understanding how those work in this application, is the water like a needle on an analog gauge?

My "Distribution Bench" for Intake manifolds is a Positive Pressure flow bench.

It allows me to blow 600+ cfm into a carb bonnet, a carb, an intake manifold, a set of cylinder heads, and finally an engine block. I use "Gang" Vertical manometers to read the differences in air flow to each cylinder of the block.

I read the air flow passed through the system with a electronic "Hot Wire" air meter on the inlet side of the flow bench. It is for rough estimates. I can take much finer cfm readings using an Orifice Box in front of the flow bench system.

Yes, it has been done. My next system will use a Vortron Supercharger as the pressure source.

In the grand scheme of things, practical considerations aside, does it really make any difference whether you blow through a manifold or suck through it? The way I see it, in either case, you're just creating a pressure difference across the manifold which causes air to flow.

One question I would have is, how much positive pressure you looking for? This would dictate the bench design.

Ah . . . not with the PTS plans :D

As Larry's pointed out, there are very good practical reasons for a pressurized system, I certainly wouldn't argue that point, I'm just suggesting that there no reason to believe that tests performed one way would necessarily be any more or less valid then ones performed the other way. Either way the air is being forced through in one case by a blower in the other by atmospheric pressure, I fail to see why there would be any difference, at least where a flowbench test is concerned.
