One of the things I do is apply thick film elastomeric materials for waterproofing, protection and so forth. One of the newer uses for this material is as blast mitigation for the military. Check this video out:

Not being in the mood to remove and disassemble the transmission in my wife's Mercedes to stop an oil leak at an accumulator, I just slathered some hand mix poly on the outside of the case. This stuff is not only plenty strong but it's also elastomeric and that got me to wondering if there would be any merit to putting some on the outside of a transmission case or engine block to reduce or eliminate oil spills in the event that the stuff on the inside tries to get to the outside.

It would act as a mild insulator and that might be a bad thing. So what do you think - would the benefits be worth the costs?

Couldn't get the video to run. Not sure how it works or performs. Could it serve as a oil pan diaper if the oil pan ruptures?

Eric,
They should coat the whole Top Fuel engine with that stuff. Make a kit and go to NHRA and have them make a rule to use it and you will be rich!
