Bi-directional averaging pitot tube? - Has anyone made one?

I've got an idea on how to make a simple one out of brass;

Make a simple jig to hold the tubing, then drill straight through (rather than just one hole on the face.) Rotate 90 degrees and slit it with a jigsaw, then solder a strip of brass down the middle. Fill one end with solder on only one half of the tube, then the other side, fill the other half with solder. Slip into your PVC and one end is exhaust, the other intake.

Thoughts?

they are available from both Meriam as an "accutube", and from Dwyer as an "DS-300 flow sensor". They can be used with a pos - neg guage as bi-directional. You could also reverse the leads to the guage from the sensor, or rotate the sensor in the pipe, for reverse operation. One side is used as an impact (pt) port and the other side as static (ps) port.

I did a little searching and found Dwyer's page on duct traversing like Bruce had suggested;



After looking at the duct traversing, I have to wonder if it's necessary to do both sides (from center) of the duct, especially if you put flow straighteners in the tubes.

If the answer is no, then why not have a single tube cut in the center *lengthwise* rather than split as two semi-circles. Basically, two regular tubes, but join them in the middle with a solid plug so they are seperate. Have one with holes facing down, the other with holes facing up.
