I have a blower that is run by a 10hp single phase 220V electric motor. Right now it is a single speed, but I would like to be able to vary its speed. I know if it was a 3 phase motor I would be able to use a VFD, but being single phase I am unsure where to look to build/buy some kind of speed control for it.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Single phase induction motors cannot run smoothly at greatly reduced speed, which is why it is not commonly done. Your best bet would definitely be to replace it with a three phase motor run from a VFD.

If I replace my existing 10hp 1ph motor with an equivalent 3ph motor, do you know offhand what 3ph hp rating I would need? I used to know this but unfortunately I haven't used me EE degree in a few years...

Brian, if the blower needs 10Hp to drive it, then it will require a similar 10Hp (or larger) rated motor to drive it, regardless of the type.
