Discussion on flowbench testing techniques "top secret" ideas . . .

This isn't really a technique, but I thought you'd all get a kick out of it. I was recently working on an inlet port for a two valve head. I was using a paint can opener to scoop some clay out of certain areas and just out of curiosity, turned the bench on and played with placing the end of it in certain areas of the port.

By placing it in the center of the floor of the port just in front of the short side I was able to pick up the flow by about 13cfm! Since then I've been working on the short side floor and short turn shape and now have the port up from about 133cfm to 148 with clay alone. I can still pick up the flow about two cfm with the paint can opener placed "just right", but it's getting pretty maxed out.

So the moral here, is that by experimenting and looking at more than just one angle, you can sometimes find some big improvements.

Yes, that short radius is very important, sometimes less flow means more H.P.(but a dyno is needed). With most of the ports nowadays it seems they're all too big(intake), it's all about burning all the mixture(smaller is sometimes better). Hoping to acquire a rear wheel dyno in the future(then I'll really become insane with this stuff). Been using epoxy for awhile now on the floors(torque improves I believe). Keep it go'in boys for the creative juices to flow, lol.

Where does it say flow testing has to be normal? Thats how other people do it not those that are here reading this info ;)

I read an article not to long ago where they used different dia balls on the end of a stick to play in the ports to see how flow was affected.

Geez something else to build!!!

Those flow balls are a handy thing to see which part of the port has high flow, and which part is stagnant, and the ball can also show up the point of greatest restriction in the port.
